Interview: 90s College Fashion with My Mom & Dad
When we think about fashion, it’s easy to assume trends are new, but many of today’s “hot looks” are just throwbacks. To prove it, I sat down with two people who lived through it all—my mom and dad—to talk about what college fashion was really like in the 1990s. Spoiler: a lot of it looks familiar today.
Q: What were the big everyday clothing trends for college students in the 90s?
Mom: Baggy jeans. Everyone wore them, especially Levi’s or GAP. And oversized flannels—you couldn’t go wrong with plaid. Think “grunge” but casual.
Dad: Yeah, it was all about being relaxed. Oversized sweatshirts were huge. Champion, Nike, and college-logo crewnecks were everywhere. You didn’t want to look too dressed up.
Q: Did people dress up for class, or was it more laid-back?
Dad: Definitely laid-back. T-shirts, baseball caps, sneakers. Nobody was worried about looking polished at 8 a.m. lectures.
Mom: Unless it was the weekend—then people made more of an effort. Girls wore mini skirts with tights, crop tops, or slip dresses layered with a cardigan. It was casual chic, but with a bit of effort.
Q: What were the must-have shoes of the 90s college scene?
Mom: Doc Martens. Every girl had a pair, either boots or chunky shoes.
Dad: For guys, Nike Air Max or Adidas Superstars. Sneakers were everything. Timberlands were popular too, especially in the colder months.
Q: What about accessories?
Mom: Chokers, scrunchies, and tiny backpacks. It was very "Clueless"-inspired.
Dad: Honestly, for guys it was just baseball caps. Maybe a chain necklace if you were into hip hop fashion.
Q: Do you see any of those trends coming back today?
Mom: Oh, almost all of them. Baggy jeans, crop tops, flannels—your generation is wearing the same things, just styled differently.
Dad: Yeah, I see Champion sweatshirts and Doc Martens again. It’s funny to watch it all circle back.
Final Thoughts
Talking with my parents about 90s college fashion made me realize that trends never really disappear—they just get recycled with a twist. The oversized fits, sneakers, and casual vibe of the 90s are alive and well on campuses today, proving that style always finds its way back around
